Today we have Spencer from Chain and Scale Creations. If you've already seen their Instagram page, you'll know they love to create the famous jelly fidget cube and dragons are starting to hatch from their pliers too. Let's find out a bit more about what drives their creations and how they got started...
How did your journey start?
I had picked up making chainmail as a busy hands hobby a little over a decade ago while I was in university. Back then I made my own rings with galvanized wire, a steel rod and a pair of wire cutters (my poor hands). Years later when Covid started up, I decided to pick the craft back up, but at that point I had the resources to buy the tools and materials to make higher quality items. Now I create chainmail and scale mail items as a 'side gig' and I sell online and at a few conventions each year.
What was the first project you ever made?
The first piece I ever made was a sheet of galvanized steel wire 4 in 1 chainmail, but I wouldn't call that a real piece. The first 'complete' piece I made was a scalemail bracelet I made with a scalemail beginners kit from The Ring Lord
What inspires you or influences your makes?
In general, I create a few of many different things. A lot of what I make at this point is items I intend to sell, so I primarily try to make designs I think will be popular. It's within that condition that I try to be creative. My most popular item is the chainmail fidget cubes and I try to come up with the best visual colour combinations. The online chainmail community has been a tremendous resource for different ideas, I strive to not directly copy anything others make, but I do try to learn elements and patterns from other extremely talented chainmail artisans. I love to try and incorporate fantasy elements into my overall design.
Do you have a dream project you would like to work on?
At some point I would love to make myself a full scale mail shirt and pauldrons. I have a full scale mail sleeve and pauldron already so this goal seems pretty realistic (once I have the time!)
